PRISME is pleased to invite The Dot Project to present VAGUE / VAGUE, David Matthew King’s first solo exhibition in Europe.
In VAGUE / VAGUE, featuring a selection of ‘acrylic on unprimed canvas’ paintings and works on paper, the California born and raised artist continues to develop his strict vocabulary of forms combined with a commanding use of colour. King unleashes his creative freedom by combining his poetic sense of rhythm and elision with self-imposed constraints. The artist limits his palette to predominantly elementary colours with the deliberate omission of pure black and pure white. This constellation of solid coloured, humble components suggests the reduction of art to its basic material elements. The simplicity of the form is played down by a deceptive form of mark making: scraping and scrubbing acrylic paint into raw canvas in repeating forms until they billow or leap from the natural ground. King stages oppositions between clear contours of forms and freshness of the unprimed canvas, that left in the raw material state becomes absolutely necessary in the same way silence is necessary to music, conversation, thought or reflection.
Through this technical approach, the works are strikingly articulate in their rhythm, line, and allusions. Made in the belief that each colour’s sole responsibility is to heighten the visual impact of the others, the works are rooted in the same principles: the tension that builds up and releases. The tension comes from the placement or movement of forms in a composition. The structures of rhythm are assembled and then interrupted by a shape positioned nearby. Spatial tensions rise through shifts in chromatic temperature, the push and pull of colours that approach and recede depending on their relative tones.
This reductive approach to painting continues into a series of abstract compositions on paper, although due to the difference in scale and medium they take on somewhat differentiate in visual aesthetic – the technique of applying pigment is more topical and superficial than the deep saturation of pigment into raw canvas. Motion, harmony, balance, space – these are the main concerns of the works on paper, whether they be watercolour, acrylic, coloured pencil, or gouache woodblock print.
Both economical and deeply sensual, King’s works contain a timeless language. Through the deceptively simple means of painting – colour, surface, and form – the artist physically challenges emotional and linguistic boundaries and definitions, that remain accessible on both personal and universal levels.
Founded in 2017 by Pierre Lorquin, PRISME in a non-traditional art gallery, located on 39 rue de Grenelle in the 7th district in Paris.
By inviting every month a different gallery to exhibit within its walls, PRISME defends a vision which is characterised not by the artists it represents, but by the galleries it invites. Subsequently, PRISME seeks to present a large spectrum of major artists.
PRISME intends to offer a greater visibility to its exhibitors whether French or International by choosing every month one or more artists from a different gallery to exhibit.
In 2018, PRISME has already enabled visitors to view works by artists like Pablo Picasso, Otto Dix, Bram Van Velde, Sol Lewitt, Judit Reigl, Jean Degottex, Richard Avedon, Barbara Kruger, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Zhang Huan, Paul Pfeffer, Jim Campbell, Andres Serrano but also those of young talents such as Quentin Derouet, Erin Lawlor, Claire Chesnier and Mara Fortunatovic.
This “gallery of galleries” is therefore driven by the idea of putting in the spotlight the vision of those who have one.
