Sebastián Espejo approaches painting as a practice of attentive wonder, an exploration of light, the natural world, and the fleeting gestures of perception. During his residency at Drumlanrig Castle, Sebastian responded to the weight of centuries held in stone, the grandeur of Baroque architecture, and the shifting rhythms of the surrounding landscape.Drumlanrig is a site where history lives not only in its architecture and grounds, but also in the artworks it holds. Home to the Buccleuch Collection, built over five centuries and featuring works by Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Ramsay, and others, the Castle offers a rare and multilayered encounter with the legacy of image-making.For Espejo, this rich artistic context becomes another quiet presence in the room, a lens through which to consider his own gestures of looking and recording. The castle and its landscape become both canvas and collaborator: a place where memory, history, and nature softly converge. Through painting, Espejo traces the meeting points of time, place, and presence, translating observation into a poetic and spatial form.
