FLORENCE SWEENEY’S work explores the intersection of personal history and the media’s obsession with violence and misrepresentation of women. Sweeney’s art unveils familial trauma, by delving into themes of the unconscious, death, memory, and psychogenesis. Not knowing her parents personally, Florence questions herself on a microscopic level of who she is. Her mother being an artist, and her father a tabloid villain, what will epigenetics come to play? Through abstraction, Sweeney produces wall sculptures that embody an anatomical topology, as if under a forensic lens. The visceral flesh that we all share in our structures, yet on a molecular level how is our composition and dispositions inherently different?
