Artist-in-Residence Programme | Summer–Autumn 2026
Sander Coers’s practice explores how memory, identity and history are inherited and reshaped over time. Working with images of the past, he combines photography with materials including textiles, wood, ceramics and oil paint, alongside digital manipulation and AI.
During his residency at Maxstoke Castle, Coers will respond to a place deeply shaped by its own history. Completed in 1345 and continuously inhabited for over six centuries, the castle has served as both a home and, during the World Wars, a hospital and military storage site. Immersing himself in its architecture and layered histories, Coers will explore Maxstoke as a living repository of memory, developing new work through photography and material experimentation.
